Cryptomeria Japonica - 10 Seeds
Cryptomeria Japonica, known as Japanese Red Cedar, is the national tree of Japan where it is associated with temples and shrines. There it is known as Sugi. This massive relative of the giant sequoia is widely grown as an ornamental tree and is a popular choice for bonsai. It is extremely prevalent in the Darjeeling region of India where its light wood is prized as a building material. Japanese Red Cedar can reach 180 feet in height with a potential trunk diameter of 12 feet! Their wide spread, which can be as much as 35 feet, makes this species a good shade tree. These evergreens are easy to grow and low maintenance with a fast rate of growth. They are considered suitable for growth in zones 5-9, or elsewhere as an indoor bonsai. Trees produce tiny cones with both male and female cones growing on the same tree.Â
Growing Information:Â
Seeds will benefit from cold stratification. Place your seeds in a moist medium such as paper towels, rockwool or sand and put them in the fridge for 3-4 weeks. After removing them from the fridge sow the seeds at a depth of ¼â€. Japanese Red Cedar can tolerate a wide range of soils but should ideally be grown in a well-draining fertile soil that is deeply tilled. It is best to grow the plants indoors or in a greenhouse until they becomes established, at which time they can be situated in full sun to partial shade.
