Salsaloa Komarovii (Saltwort)- 75 seeds
Salsaloa Komarovii aka Saltwwort is a traditional Japanese annual herb also known as Okahijiki or Land seaweed. It is endemic of the salt marches and saline soils of Japan. It grows well in less saline soil as well. Moreover, it is a favorite addition to salads in Asian cuisine. It has long succulent leaves with a crunchy texture. The bright green leaves should be harvested quickly to avoid woody stems and prickly tips. It is used in sushi as well. The longer stems are usually steamed and served as a side dish.
Medicinal use: Salsaloa Komarovii is rich in vitamins and minerals: vitamin A, potassium, and calcium. The juice from this herb is mainly used as a diuretic.
Growing information: Salsaloa Komarovii should be grown in full sun in an evenly moist soil. It should be watered often and fertilized from time to time. The seeds should be planted outdoors when the soil has reached a temperature around 75 degrees F. They should be covered with about 1/8” -1/4’ of soil. The pant blooms from July to October and grow to a height of 8-10 inches. The seeds can be planted in close proximity since saltwort tolerates crowding well. Space plants about 2” apart in row that are 12” apart. For a continuous supply, this herb should be planted several times throughout the season of fresh, young foliage.
